THE BOOK
The Apple Lady was my mother. Dawn is my oldest daughter, but really my four children embodied in one. The apple stand is a real place on a farm in San Luis Obispo, California. I grew up on this farm pruning, thinning, picking and selling apples. Later I watched my children help the Apple Lady at the stand.

People who visited the stand knew the Apple Lady for her hard work, cheery disposition and ever-present smile. Her grandchildren, however, knew her as teacher, comforter and ultimate friend.

Gently she guided them; completely she loved them. This is her story and their story—a snippet in time—
a day at the apple stand.

THE AUTHOR
Mary McDonald currently lives in Davis, California, where she is wife to Craig McDonald and mother to Dane, Dawn, Shay and Luke. Mary has enjoyed writing from the time she was little and used to hide under the covers at night and write dramatic animal stories.

In graduate school and beyond, as a developmental psychologist, Mary published studies on visual development and malnutrition in children. Most recently she is a writer/editor for Gospel for Asia, an organization serving native missionaries in India and surrounding countries.

THE ILLUSTRATOR
Wendy Pond was born and raised in Santa Barbara, California. She comes from a family of artists and began painting at a very young age in her great-grandmother’s studio. Wendy makes a living as a portrait artist and art teacher. She currently lives on an historic apple farm in San Luis Obispo, California, near where the The Apple Lady takes place. Experiencing the apple season first hand has given her much inspiration for this — her first children’s picture book.
